With how fast paced life can be or how easy it is to email and text, handwritten notes are starting to be a thing of the past. But just the other day, a few coworkers and I had an interesting conversation about the importance of Thank You cards, especially when it comes to interviews.

I'll start by prefacing that I work at a staffing firm, therefore it is our job to help and prep candidates for new opportunities of employment, and we're good at it. Like really good. So after a candidate came back from an interview and told us she had not sent out a Thank You card to her interviewers, she was promptly sent to the closest CVS to buy cards. Personally, I didn't see the big deal, as long as she at least sent a Thank You email, which apparently is a big NO-NO! Whoops.

But I guess, it is all about the idea that that person went out of his or her way to get the card, write a personal message without spell check and made sure they had legible penmanship, etc.

As easy as apple pie...

Well as easy as making apple pie from a recipe entirely in DUTCH!!! The boy happens to be half Dutch and last night we ventured into the kitchen to make his mom's famous pie crust from ~~scratch~~ a box. I know what you're thinking...making a pie crust from a box?! It can't be as good as from scratch. But trust me, it was delicious! I mean once you translated the recipe to English and converted all the grams to cups, it was easy peasy!

Here are the instructions:

1. 1Bekijk de bakfilm appeltaart bakken en doe inspiratie op!

2. 2Snijd de appels eens in plakjes in plaats van in blokjes. Je kunt de appeltaartpunten gemakkelijker snijden.

3. 3Wel de rozijnen eens in rum.

4. 4Bekijk hoe je rozijnen welt in de handige bakfilm krenten en rozijnen wellen.

5. 5Besprenkel de appelstukjes met een beetje citroensap. Zo voorkom je dat de appeltjes verkleuren.

6. 6Als je niet weet of je eieren nog goed zijn. Vul een kan met 1 liter water. Leg de eieren erin. Eieren die drijven zijn niet goed meer. Deze kun je niet meer eten.

7. 7Heb je moeite met het vullen van de springvorm? Rol het deeg uit tot een ronde lap en leg deze in de springvorm. Geen deegroller in huis? Neem een fles, was deze af en gebruik de fles als deegroller.

8. 8Bestrooi de bodem van de appeltaart met een paar eetlepels Custard. De custard neemt het vocht van de appelstukjes op en geeft een lekkere vanillesmaak.

9. 9Bak eens een appeltaart met amandelspijs. Bereid het amandelspijs zoals is aangegeven op de verpakking. Rol het uit tot een ronde lap en leg het over de deegbodem. Leg daar de appelstukjes bovenop.

10. 10Dek de appeltaart af met aluminiumfolie als de bovenkant van de appeltaart voor het einde van de baktijd al te donker kleurt.

11. 11Is de appeltaart na het bakken te bleek, zet de appeltaart nog een paar minuten onder de grill.

12. 12Bak de appeltaart onder het midden van de oven, zodat de bodem goed gaar wordt.

13. 13Voor een fris-zoete smaak kun je 2 eetlepels abrikozenjam door het appelmengsel mengen.

14. 14Een appeltaart kun je invriezen. Verwarm de appeltaart voor het serveren voor een extra lekkere smaak. Laat de appeltaart eerst ontdooien. Verwarm de oven voor op 200°C en warm de appeltaart afhankelijk van de grootte tussen vijf en vijftien minuten op.

After watching a Man v Food marathon over the holiday break, I was inspired to try as many of the restaurants showcased on the show. First on the list was Hot & Juicy, where they serve a variety of seafood served by the pound and in plastic bag! It's all sorts of class, I know. Oh, and did I also mention that you get a fancy bib?

Their seafood is steamed and seasoned with your choice of 1 of 4 flavors and varying spice levels. I chose the most popular seasoning of the "hot & juicy" and baby spice (spice up your life!) level. Yup. Baby. Spice. And before you go on and judge me, let me tell you that even the mild spice (a level above baby) is burn your lips off spicy and I can handle heat. Also highly recommended is to get corn and potato (an extra 75 cents) added to your bag.

Eating from a plastic bag never tasted so good.

The other night the boy and I took a walk around Yards Park, a new park located near my neighborhood in Navy Yard. For all of you who don't know the area very well, even 5 years ago Navy Yard was a much different place. But now it has the Nationals stadium, new parks, and will soon have an ice skating rink, a 24-hour diner, and even a beer garden!

As Bob Dylan once said, "These times, they are a changing." Okay, well I know he wasn't talking about my neighborhood, but you get the idea. And trust me, I'm excited for these changes.

Suit Up!

Blazer, Pant, Skirt

As mentioned in a previous post, I started a new job (yay!) but one that requires me to wear a business suit 4 out of 5 days (booo!). So I basically went from being able to wear what I wanted to work (god bless start-up companies) to wearing a suit everyday. Talk about change.

But in this transition to suits, The Limited has been my life saver! Their suits are (relatively) inexpensive, fit well, and come in an array of great colors! They have made what can be super boring and defeminizing, to something fun and flattering!

Tip: If you're trying to get the most bang for your buck, look for coupon codes online (I found one for The Limited that wasn't posted on their site) and when buying a blazer, if an option buy both the pants and skirt. It's like buying two suits for one!

And is it lame that wearing a suit also makes me feel a little bit closer to this guy?

After loving these shoes on Alicia from "Cheetah is the New Black" and debating on whether or not I'd actually wear them, I spotted them in store on sale...and by on sale I mean like OMG ON SALE. I'm talking 30% off, plus an additional 25% off (using the coupon code ONSAVE25)!!! They were pretty much paying me to take them home.

And I absolutely LOVE them. Although a bit tricky to get on at first (they don't have a zipper), they are just what I was looking to wear for this Fall. They are an even more amazing color in person, made from a quality faux-leather material (they don't even have that weird smell that other faux-leathers give off...you know what I'm talking about), and are super comfy to boot!!! (teehee)

Best of DC: Toki Underground

Two words: AMEN RAMEN!

As a child that has grown up on ramen (hello...asian!), you can imagine my (squeal of) delight when I learned that DC had finally opened up a ramen shop. Expecting a wait, I was surprised when we were seated immediately. (Note: I went on a Monday around 6) Small, yet cozy, Toki's decor is reason enough for a visit. It has a friendly staff (shout out to our waiter Joe!) and a fun, hip(ster) vibe with great music!

Now finally onto the food! As you can see from the menu, it's pretty standard.

We started with pan fried pork dumplings. Now while they weren't my favorite dumplings (I am spoiled by my mother), they were far better than others that I've had in DC.

Then for my main dish, I ordered the Toki Hakata Classic that features a rich broth, chashu pork, and a soft boiled egg. This ain't the 10 cent ramen you ate in college. It was delicious and only got more enjoyable as I continued eating. Though not impressed by the chashu pork, which I felt could have had a lot more flavor or been a better cut of meat, the soft boiled egg and noodles were spot on. In fact, I would even go so far as to say the noodles were better than Momofuku in NYC. *gasp* But I would recommend spending the extra $2 and getting additional noodles. OH, and did I mention the spoons they give you? It's more of like a ladle...a ladle!!!

My sister ordered the Kimchi Hakata, which had a spicy broth, chashu pork, and a soft boiled egg. She LOVED hers...maybe so much that she barely let me get a ladle full of broth! So greedy! It was spicy, but not overwhelmingly so.

All in all, I highly recommend Toki Underground for your next culinary adventure! It's going to be even better during the cold wintery months.

Best of DC: "The Lobster Truck"

After a hectic week of moving and starting a new job, I'm BACK...in DC that is. Yes, I have officially moved from NYC back to DC!!! Eep. And what better welcome back than the feature in today's DC Express newspaper: Best of DC 2011! As the name may give it away, it highlights the best restaurants, clubs, theatres, etc. in DC. But most of you who know me, know I'm only concerned with the restaurants portion. Therefore, my new goal is to go to every restaurant listed (and I guess by default stock up on stretchy pants?)!!!

Now, I present to you what was voted the Best DC Food Truck: Red Hook Lobster Truck aka "The Lobster Truck!

I'll start by telling you that when I was younger I was convinced that lobster made me feel sea sick. I was stupid. 7 years later, I'm still trying to make up for the ALL that lobster I missed out on. And how do I do that you ask? Well I start by eating lobster rolls that look like this.

Maybe this.

Definitely that.

I usually get the Maine style, which is fresh Maine lobster with mayo. But they do also offer a Connecticut style, which is Maine lobster that has been poached in buttah. And the toasted buttery bread it is served on adds the perfect texture to the fresh lobster meat.

Let me tell you, though it can be a bit pricey ($15 for a lobster roll) it definitely lives up to the hype.

Fun fact: the founder/owner's father is Maury Povich. Yup, that Maury.

As a lover of boldly colored skinny jeans, I was not a fan of the price tag on most of them, especially with the uncertainty of how often I'd wear them.

But then I found this pair from Old Navy for a steal! $34.94!!! They come in petite sizes, are extra stretchy, and super comfortable! But a word of advice, order a size up.

I can't wait to wear this with striped tees, oversized sweaters, and booties.

Today we took advantage of the 85 degree weather and hung out at Regional Food and Drink (RFD)!!! Though their food menu is pretty standard; their drink menu is extensive (like 6 pages of tiny font worth!)

Ch Ch Changes

Like for every girl, my hair is very important to me. But sometimes you just need to mix it up. In the trusted (gorgeous) hands of Celso from Bang salon in Chinatown, I had him cut off 5 inches!

If you're in DC, I highly recommend getting your haircut by anyone at Bang. Everyone is really friendly, helpful/honest, and hair cuts are not wallet breaking ($44)! Hooray!

Gym Rat

As mentioned in previous posts, I've started getting back into my gym routine! Before you know it, I'll be a lean mean running machine! We can all hope right?

I'll be the first to admit it, going to the gym every (other) day can get BORING! But these little things make the gym just a little bit easier.

Water bottle - Got to stay hydrated. Sometimes I have to pause my run because I'm just so thirsty (and it allows me to catch my breath!)
Clothes - Cute ones at that. It sounds really girly, but it makes my workout slightly less miserable when I see that even if I'm drenched in sweat, at least my outfit looks good.
Headband - Though bangs are so in these days, running with them stuck to your forehead is not. These headbands come in a large array of colors and don't slip!
Sneakers - A good pair makes all the difference when running.
iTouch - Songs like "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" and "Dog Days are Over" help keep me motivated. And the people next to me just love it when I sing outloud!

Work It Out

This past week, I made the decision that I've avoided the gym long enough and that I should start hitting the treadmill at least 3x a week. To my surprise, my first run back was AMAZING. I did 3 miles and didn't die! Hooray!

But then the next day, my body didn't feel so AMAZING. My legs were sore and stairs were my enemy, so I turned to my trusty elliptical machine. I don't know about you, but I've always found the treadmill to be a better workout. Maybe it has something to do with how much I sweat and want to cry while on the treadmill compared to the elliptical. Torn with still wanting to workout, I found this elliptical routine from FitSugar.

To my pleasant surprise, it made me sweat, huff and puff, and allowed my legs to recover from the shock of running the day before. And while it won't replace my treadmill workout, I do think it's good for when I'm all sore and cranky.

Must Watch: Drive

The boy was in town this past weekend and in typical date fashion, we went to see a movie.

*Yawn...places arm around girl's shoulder*

Knowing of the boy's man crush on Ryan Gosling, we settled on Drive. I hadn't seen any previews or read any articles, but I gathered that it involved cars or some sort of driving. I'm brilliant, I get it. And hey, who would complain about being able to openly drool at Ryan Gosling for 90 minutes? Not this girl!

But from the 80's vibe to the surprisingly gruesome nature of the film, I was hooked. It had me jumping in my chair, hiding behind my hands (much to the chagrin of the boy), and swooning. Plus, the music was amazing!

Inspired by Grace from Stripes and Sequin's blog post (umm Grace you better be getting a commission from this!), I decided to check out Old Navy, a store and website that I haven't visited in ages.

Today, I finally took a look at the Missoni x Target collaboration, which goes on sale September 13th. And while I love Missoni (especially Margherita cause she's so adorable!), I must say that although I am not too impressed by the clothes, I am totally digging their selection of home goods!

Zara trench coat

Although on the top of my Fall shopping list (and has been for the past two years) is the Burberry Khaki Trench Coat (drool), my bank account begs to differ.

Trench coats are a staple in my closet. They are perfect to protect you from the rain (hello Irene!), look flattering on everyone, and can even hide your darkest secrets (let's go streaking!).

What do you think? Does this Zara trench coat do the job?

Banana Republic Slim Fit Shirt

Let's face it. When it comes to dressing for work (and in general) it's much easier to be a guy. This was reinforced last week, when the boy, who just got an offer (CONGRATS!) said to me the most romantic thing.

Boy: Lesley, take me shopping.

*swoon*

I took him to Soho, or more importantly the Banana Republic in Soho and he went wild. The boy is on the slender side, which makes shirt shopping harder than you'd think, and has a job where he needs to dress in the middle of business casual to business professional.

After trying on countless of other brands (sorry Brooks Brothers and J. Crew), we both agreed for the price and the fit, Banana Republic Slim Fit shirt will probably be the only brand he wears. He's looking into buying them in every color, so make sure to keep those colors coming!

And the best part about them, is that they can be worn under a suit, with dress pants, and even jeans. Talk about getting more bang for your buck.

Plus, I must say, boy you look pretty darn cute.

While doing my normal weekend online shopping rounds, I checked out Steve Madden and was pleasantly surprised to find they are having a HUGE clearance sale on a ton of their sandals. I know, this is a sign summer is ending and I didn't need to buy three pairs, but I'm just stocking up for next summer right?!

Check it out shoe lovers! But do it fast! Most shoes are only available in 9's and 10's!!!

After buying countless ~~overpriced~~ high quality shirts, that ended up lasting the same amount if not less time than shirts from H&M or Forever 21, I thought I swore them off.

But that was until I tried on this Joie Soft tee. It more than lives up to its name. Not only is it soft, comfy, and well made, it hangs like a dream (meaning it hides my food baby)!!!

Trust me, it's totally worth the price!

Although I love my height, I'll admit that shopping for my 5' 2" frame can be somewhat challenging. And as much as I adore this season's maxi dress or long dresses in general, I find it hard to find one that doesn't swallow me whole or won't double as a broom while I walk.

Despite my poor history with long dresses, I'm tempted to take a risk with this T by Alexander Wang dress. It looks perfect for those hot NYC summer's and has a bit of oolala with the sheerness.

AND it got good reviews on Shopbop, which I find to be really helpful and what I'm basing my entire purchase around.

I'll admit it. I've been on a bit of a Sephora binge (among other things...see food posts below).

I've come to the conclusion that since I don't use a lot of beauty products, it's okay to invest in high quality brands. At least that's what I'm telling myself. (We'll see when my credit card statement comes.)

Anyhoo, recently I decided I needed to start being more proactive about taking care of my skin, specifically my eyes (stay away from me crow's feet!), which led me to Dior's Hydra Life Pro-Youth Sorbet Eye Creme.

After using it for just over a week, it's safe to say that I already LOVE it and can see it being a staple in my beauty bag! It goes on light, feels cool, and certainly lives up to its name as hydrating. AND most importantly, it doesn't burn, which I had read other brands had caused. (ouch!)

Also, I'd like to point out the other day I was carded going to see a R-rated movie and I thought to myself, it must be the new eye cream.

Today I went into Sephora with the purpose of buying eye cream and as I patiently waited in line, I made the rookie mistake of looking at all the small/tiny lip glosses, perfumes, mascaras, etc (that aren't that expensive...but do add up).

Silly me.

But I ended up buying this pack of 2 Jack Black's (not the one you're thinking of...trust me) lip balms. They come in cute tubes (perfect for throwing in your purse), great flavors (hello ginger and blackberry!), and leave your lips with the perfect amount of gloss and shine.

You want to know the best part? The price! Ten dollars for them both!

And let's admit it, for Sephora (I love you!) that's a steal.

When it comes to doing my makeup, I'm a very simple and low maintenance girl. Whether I'm going out for a night on the town or going to get groceries, 10 out of 10 times, I'll only be wearing eyeliner. I'm boring. I get it.

But this weekend, I finally decided to get outside of my comfort zone and pick up some goodies at Sephora. I decided to take advantage of their free (after you buy a $50 gift card, which you can use on your own purchases) Sephora's Special Occassions Makeover (they also do an express makeovers that focus on lips, eyes, etc.)

$160 and 20 minutes later, my new "going out look" was complete.

All I have to say is "Sup cutie?"

P.S. If you're in NYC and at the 34th location, ask for AMY. Literally, the best!

Since moving to the city, I've had my list of restaurants I need to try. Momofuku - Milk Bar being one of them. Known for it's cereal milk soft serve, which I found surprisingly creative and accurate in flavor, I knew I had to check it out! Oh, and while in line, we were persuaded to try the banana cake truffles (yum!).

Though, it's way overhyped, it's definitely worth a shot. Or you could just eat your corn flakes with a little extra milk and drink that.

Just sayin.

After using a business card/cigarette case as a wallet for the past year, I've been craving the real thing. Monday night:

If it's Monday night and you're in Argentina, you better be at Konex, Argentina's top cultural center, where they have a live percussion performance. The music is amazing, the audience is full of energy and dancing, and the after party is even better! Don't plan on going to bed early, this is truly a city that never sleeps.

Tuesday night:

La Ventana - Tango Show

No pictures, they didn't allow them. But the show was versatile, funny, and sultry.

Wednesday night:

La Terreza

In the states this would be considered a happy hour, well a happy hour on crack. It starts at 6 and ends at 12 (but extends till 3). It'll make work the next day so much FUN! Sorry, was I too loud? Drink your water.

Thursday night:

Movie night!

Friday night:

For our last hoorah, we went to El Living, a club that has separate rooms for 80s, 90s, and today music. AND each room has the song's music video playing on the wall for extra inspiration and sweet dance moves.

Last week, M and I packed our bags and headed to Argentina to see the sights, have a little fun in the sun, and see our friend who had recently moved down there. (Hey Nick!)

We only had 9 days, but we were able to pack in a lot.

One of our first stops was to San Telmo's Sunday markets. These markets sell things like antiques, jewelry, leather (lot's of leather!), paintings, and lots of fun little nicknacks. And make sure to bring your walking shoes, the roads are cobbled and go on for blocks!
